I had to visit the captivity, briefly.

Room is not a place you will want to visit. Unfortunately for Ma and Jack, this is where they live. Jack in fact, was born there and spent his entire 5 years living in this 11 by 11 foot space; Ma, has for at least a year or two longer. Room is expertly narrated by Jack, in his 5 year old voice. His only contact with the outside world is what he watches on his rabbit-eared television set for a program or two a day, and what little Ma has told him. Would you want to tell a child not able to go outside what he is missing? I would not. The only other person Jack knows is real is Old Nick, who is older than Ma who delivers food and brings Sundaytreat.

I could not put it down.

City girl Tamara was born into wealth and luxury, but her life is turned upside down when her father acquires too many debts and takes the easy way out with suicide. Tamara and her mother, left destitute, move in with her strange Aunt and kind Uncle outside a tiny village in the middle of nowhere. Then she finds a old book in the library bookmobile, a diary written in her own hand that tells her what will happen the next day.

Can she change what happens? Should she try to change what will happen? Will it make a difference? Will she unlock any secrets?

You read about kids finding their faces on milk cartons, but what do you do when you see your “adopted” daughter’s baby picture in a missing person’s ad in a magazine? Ruby and Lark (the baby)’s story unfolds from there.

A good read for book clubs. A reading group guide is included. This is Amy Bourret’s first book.
