Room is a riveting read. Room is compelling, horrific, and hopeful. I had to visit the captivity, briefly.

Room is not a place you will want to visit. Unfortunately for Ma and Jack, this is where they live. Jack in fact, was born there and spent his entire 5 years living in this 11 by 11 foot space; Ma, has for at least a year or two longer. Room is expertly narrated by Jack, in his 5 year old voice. His only contact with the outside world is what he watches on his rabbit-eared television set for a program or two a day, and what little Ma has told him. Would you want to tell a child not able to go outside what he is missing? I would not. The only other person Jack knows is real is Old Nick, who is older than Ma who delivers food and brings Sundaytreat.

I could not put it down.

Mothers and other liars is a book that you can’t help but want to read. I was hooked when I read that the mom, Ruby, found a baby and rescued her from a truck stop trash can. It was nine years later when Ruby find out that the baby was not tossed aside by the birth parents, but by drugged up carjackers.

You read about kids finding their faces on milk cartons, but what do you do when you see your “adopted” daughter’s baby picture in a missing person’s ad in a magazine? Ruby and Lark (the baby)’s story unfolds from there.

A good read for book clubs. A reading group guide is included. This is Amy Bourret’s first book.

Do you have a new Ebook reader? Did you know you can download books for free using Overdrive through the library? There are several E-readers, like the Nook and Sony E-reader that are compatible. Sorry though, the Kindle does not play with Overdrive.
